Each year when I go to the dermatologist, it goes something like this:
Her: Remind me where you grew up?
Me: Idaho.
Her: Ah, in the sun. Me: Yes, at my grandma's pool.
Her: Ah yes, lots of sun. Me: Uh huh.
Her: And you're Irish?
Me: [sheepishly] yes.
So - while I've never been someone who lays in the sun, I've spent a lot of time in it and in recent years I've been good about using lots of sunscreen everywhere. But I've never found anything good for my face. It's hard to find a sunscreen that doesn't turn white and cakey, or greasy, or leave some sort of weird layer or sheen. Until now.
Here's my first fave:
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid - It's $12.49 and it's awesome.
It's really thin. It's not a cream, it's a liquid with a really high SPF, so it's great for the face. For me, I get tons of freckles on my nose where my sunglasses reflect (my coworker had skin cancer there, scary!) and a thin coat does the job perfectly.
There's no greasiness because it goes on smooth and soaks right in. Not lotiony or layery, which is great for under makeup or if you have a moisturizer that you love.
There are a few other high-end cosmetic lines that make liquid sunscreens. Laura Mercier makes one and so does Clarins. But really, I have to say that this one is pretty awesome for $12.
Which leads me to my second fave... where do you put all your favorite summer stuff? Naturally, I needed straw tote.
And I found one. On Clearance. At Target. I think you'll agree it's pretty fun. It's the St. Bart's for Target brand and I think it was a pretty lucky find. The sequins are cute and it's the perfect size for taking on the boat (the one I dream of owning) or pool (that we share with the geriatrics that live in our condos) or to the farmer's market (which means I'd have to get up early). Actually, I've gotten good use of it already!
For a bonus fave, you've gotta watch this commercial, and I'm sure you've had a conversation/argument/laugh about it.
